Mel's April 2013 Birchbox
You be the judge of that - is Yes To _____ a high-end brand? I'm not knocking that it isn't an awesome brand, but this isn't what I paid for. I also love how Birchbox took down the word deluxe sized samples from their website, at least they're being honest now that they're sending foil/blister packets.
Items in my box:
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
Caudalie SOS Morning Eye Rescue
Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream
Yes To Carrots Lip Butter - Mint
Yes To Cucumber Facial Towelettes (MISSING)
Yes To Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub (blister packets)
The only redeeming quality in this box was the fact that I can either subscribe to Women's Health magazine, or get a refund of $9.99 if I choose not to subscribe.
We had a long run Birchbox, but you've changed way too much since I started my subscription over a year ago.

Anya's January Birchbox
Here's what is in my January Birchbox:

- amika Color pHerfection Shampoo
- Harvey Prince Skinny Chic

The package claimed it was a "lavender nail lacquer remover finger mitts." It had a very faint floral scent beneath the usual acetone scent. I tested this out on the manicure you see in the thebalm photo two above.
Here's the result. It did clear off all ten nails pretty well. But for $2 a pop (6 for $12), I think I'll stick with my bottle of nail polish remover--even at the loss of the faint floral scent.
Harvey Prince Skinny Chic
This is a nice sized perfume sample. Skinny Chic isn't an overpowering scent. The package describes it as: "Green Apple, Sweet Mint and Warm Amber" I don't notice any mint (which is a good thing) but the combination of green apple and warm amber is lovely. I will definitely use up this entire tube :)
My™ Multi-Purpose Mattifying Moisturizer
While this moisturizer did cut down on shine and it did seem to moisturize, it made my skin burn a little at first. The scent was nothing to write home about. At $68 a tube, there is no way I'll be buying this.
amika Color pHerfection Shampoo
I've yet to try this product... I'll do a specific post about it if it turns out to be amazing ;)
Anya's December Birchbox
This month's Birchbox is sweet!
I got a full-sized ModelCo SHINE Ultra Lip Gloss that smells like strawberries and goes on prettily.
Here's a swatch:
There was also an extra packet of the Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique - Protect. This may have been an error but I'm always in the market for thermal protector.
They sent me a little tube of Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream. If I'm reading correctly, this stuff is supposed to be better than BB creams. And can be used instead of foundation. Well, not in my case. I still need the whole shebang. But at least I didn't have to buy a huge bottle to discover that.
The box came with a nice-sized travel bottle of Thymes Body Lotion "naia" and a little sample of "Lotus Santal". Naia smells great and makes my skin feel nice and soft. Lotus Santal is muskier but still nice.
Anya's November Birchbox
So here's a picture of the stuff in my Birchbox this month...sans the potato chip chocolate.
- Miracle Skin Transformer™ Vanish Instant Imperfection Corrector
- I didn't notice this doing anything useful at all. It wasn't good as a primer it wasn't good as a concealer. It just wasn't good.
- Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod
- This was yummy and unique but I'm not sure it would be worth the money to buy a whole set of them.
- Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme Petite Cologne Absolue (in a tiny vial inside that white envelope)
- This has a nice woodsy floral scent. I can't figure out if its for a girl or guy but I do like it. It's one of my favorite perfume samples. I'm going to be sad when I run out because that price tag is a little high.
- Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture & Volume Spray Travel Size
- My first impression of this spray was that it had a strange sour scent. I have unruly wavy hair that has to be straightened with a straightening iron to look decent.
- I followed the directions, spraying my straightened hair from ends to roots as I lifted up. My hair flopped back down, every bit as flat as usual. If I fluffed it a bit, it would stay up for a little while. But it would do the same with a light hair spray too and probably stay that way better. While this product doesn't leave my hair feeling as sticky as a hair spray, I don't think it's worth the difference.
- stila all over shimmer liquid luminizer try-me-set
- I received the pale pink in my November box. My skin is fair but this stuff is difficult to see, even when gooped on. The subtle all-over sheen it mentions when mixed with fondation is what I get from using the product by itself. I have shimmery body lotions that have more coverage than this stuff.

Mel's September 2012 Birchbox
Item's Received:
1. Bvlgari - Mon Jasmin Noir
2. Color Club - Put a Pin in It
3. Twistband - Lace Hair Tie
4. Vasanti - Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
5. WEI to Go - Sleep Over Kit
Extra: Brush Guards
1. Bvlgari - Mon Jasmin Noir
I didn't bother picturing the perfume because it smells horrible. It's the standard little sample bottle of perfume.
2. Color Club - Put a Pin in It
I found the brand Color Club through Birchbox and love it. The color is gorgeous, and the formula is awesome.
3. Twistband - Lace Hair Tie
Another Twistband. I won't bash it, but you can make these yourself a lot cheaper by buying elastic and cutting it and then knotting it. Here is a site that you can purchase elastic by the yard (www.fleuristesupplies.com)
4. Vasanti - Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
I love getting face scrub in my Birchbox. I haven't found my go to face wash product yet, but I've found several awesome ones through these subscription boxes.
5. WEI to Go - Sleep Over Kit
CC Cream? Never heard of before this but I'm super excited to try it!
Extra: Brush Guard
Brush guards might not excite some of you, but I was super happy to get them. I had never heard of them before, but I can see where they would be useful.
This month's box wasn't something that wowed me, but I'm fairly happy with everything I got. In case you don't know, Birchbox is a monthly subscription that is $10 a month. You can easily cancel on their site at any time. You can sign up for Birchbox on their site (www.birchbox.com).
Anya's September Birchbox
This Month's Birchbox featured the following (shown above)
- kate spade new york Twirl
- Purple twistband™ Hair Tie
- 1 tili Bag
- WEI™ to Go Sleep Over Kit: Real Clean and Ideal Skin
- 21 drops Aromatherapy Blends "Focus" scent
- Birchbox and Color Club® Custom Collection "Status Update"
My favorite products in this box are the twistband hair tie and the Color Club polish.
twistband
This does exactly what it says it will. From Birchbox's web site:
"They keep hair secure without leaving ugly creases behind, and look as good on our wrists as they do in our ponytails."
Color Club
I've never tried Color Club. The dark gray color went on with 1 coat, nice and opaque and it held up for several days. I haven't tried stamping with it (my free time has been sadly lacking).
Update: 9/29 I added a swatch for one coat of this color (above).
I've also stamped with it. It stamps really well. The color is nice and rich.
21 Drops
I used this last night and ended up feeling queasy but not focused. I'm not sure if my queasiness was related or not but I'm half afraid to try it again.
This one is billed as:
The appropriately named Focus uses rosemary leaf oil, peppermint leaf oil, and a touch of frankincense to help you concentrate.
twirl by Kate Space
is not for me.
It's billed as being
"fruity floral"
"combination of top notes of watermelon, blackberry, and red currant"
"a middle layer of orange blossom, jasmine, and magnolia."
"Musk and a dose of French macaroons balance the composition and add an undercurrent of sophistication."
I don't like watermelon. Maybe that's why.
Wei to Go
The "Real Clean" Gelled Oil Cleanser did a fine job cleaning my make-up off my face. I tested it by running a cotton pad soaked in astringent over one cheek. The pad came back clean. So, nice job.
It was a little strange because the product didn't feel like it did much at first. But the proof was on the cotton pad (or rather what wasn't on the cotton pad).
I'd say the "Ideal Skin" Perfect Finish wasn't anything spectacular. The product doesn't specifically say it's foundation, but basically that's what it is.
It says it doesn't require moisturizer but my skin soaked it right up. Maybe that's the point since it's supposed to benefit skin over time? I didn't have time to layer too much on my skin.
I'm not terribly pleased with the package it came in. There's a small hole beneath that white cap. You smoosh the envelope and a small amount comes out. Both packages say to use a pea sized amount. I had to use more. I guess my face is needier ;)
tili Bag
These were my least favorite product in this box.
They're glorified ziplock bags for like 5x the price.
No thank you.

I got my first Birchbox a few weeks ago.
As a designer, the box made me squee a little. It's a standard cardboard color but then it has the lovely embossed pink logo on it. Inside were my goodies wrapped in pink tissue paper. Someone had hand-tied it with ribbon. It was a lovely touch!
Here's what was inside my box:
- Schick Hydro Silk Razor
- Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss
- Apothederm™ Stretch Mark Cream
- SHU UEMURA Art of Hair Full Shimmer Illuminating Shampoo
- SHU UEMURA Art of Hair Full Shimmer Illuminating Treatment
- Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur
I've yet to open the razor as I had an open box of others I needed to get through first. I'll update this once I do.
However, I have tried the stretch mark cream and the Viva la Juicy La Fleur.
The cream did absolutely nothing for me.
The perfume was nice. I'll use all of it (the little sample spritzer is adorable!). But I doubt I'll actually buy any of it. I'm cheap and I like smelly lotions better than perfumes.
As far as these three, the lip gloss is tiny and definitely pink. After application it fades to complement my lip color rather than look strange unlike a few other pink glosses I've owned.
The SHU UEMURA smells wonderful. Seriously. It claims it has musk rose oil in it and it definitely smells like roses. But I didn't note any difference after using both together and then the shampoo the following day by itself. I made sure I used no other products with it (I have a few leave-in treatments) but again, I noted nothing. I'd definitely use the stuff if it were free but not at the price tag they're asking for it ($48 for the shampoo and $68 for the treatment).
So that's my Birchbox write-up. Thanks for reading!
August 2012 Birchbox
Items Received:
1. Schick Hydro Silk Razor
2. GLOSS Moderne High Gloss Masque
3. Beauty Fixation Lipstick Touch-Up
4. Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur
5. Sumita Brow Base Pencil
As an extra this month all of the boxes have a Schick Hydro Silk Razor. This item pissed quite a few people off. Most people are angry because Birchbox is supposed to give high end samples, not something you can purchase at a drug store. I'm easy to please, I'll use the razor, so I'm happy getting it.
I'm always looking for something new to use on my hair that will leave it hydrated. I haven't heard of this brand before but ouch on the price for the full size ($39)! This is a super thick cream type masque.
This is one item that I am not impressed with at all. Q-tips, seriously?
I normally hate the perfume samples that Birchbox sends out, but this month I am in LOVE. Juicy Couture has a bunch of scents that are not for me, but La Fleur is heavenly. I love that this sample has a little squirt top instead of a stopper.
I've never heard of Sumita, and was excited to see it in my box. I received the Brow Base, which is basically a concealer pencil. It goes on creamy, and does not skip at all. I plan on using this as an eye shadow primer.
Are you subscribed to Birchbox? If so what did you get in your box this month?
