"Leather Effect Nail Polish" Review

This is another Ulta buy. I spotted it on my way to the register after a hair appointment. The little skull and crossbones thingies sold me. I hunted all over the packaging for a company name and couldn't find one. So, I have no idea who made this. It might just be Ulta...

Here's what it looks like:


This doesn't work as directed:


Shaking the little tubes over the nails doesn't work well because the "chips" are actually quite large. This would be neat for Halloween but not an everyday look...unless you're Goth ;)

The leather effect is on par with the Nails Inc. polish I tried and cost the same but came with the extra tubes, so it's a pretty good deal if you're wanting special effect polishes.

This is another Sephora find from when I headed over to Ohio. I tested this nails inc. leather effect polish in the store and fell in love with the effect. I bought it. But when I use it at home, it ends up clumping. I haven't gotten the hang of it.

I tried it again Sunday with a different basecoat and it came out really nicely. Here's the end result:

Maybelline's Color Show polishes are a bargain (they're usually about $2.99), so when I saw a display for their new "Vintage Leather" line at Target, I literally squealed and promptly Instagramed it. The bottle shown here is actually a green rather than aqua.



The effect is a matte, almost chalk board consistency with a powdery cast as if I'd kept my fingers in hard water for too long. MG thinks it's neat. I think it's meh. Here's how it looked after one day:



And I hadn't even done dishes, laundry, or anything else but standard day-to-day.

So, if you're looking for a neat effect you can apply and then remove the next day, this is a bargain. But if you want long wearing without having to float between top coats? Look elsewhere.
