Maybelline Color Show Trend Effects - Holographic & Polka Dots
Melissa heard about Maybelline releasing Trend Effects polishes including "Holographic" and "Polka Dots" a few weeks ago. Since then I've been stopping by the beauty section at every Walmart I visit, impatiently waiting for them. Finally I spotted them yesterday.
At the cheap price of $2.97 I bought two of the "Holographics" and one "Polka Dots". The two holographic polishes I bought were "Lavender Lustre" and "Mystic Green". (Note: The lighting made the lavender look silver in the bottle, but it looks more like lavender.)
I did two coats of Lavender Lustre, here they are in order:
Lavender Lustre One Coat |
Lavender Lustre Two Coats |
I did two coats of Mystic Green, here they are in order:
Mystic Green One Coat |
Mystic Green Two Coats |
And the Polka Dots color I bought was "Clearly Spotted", the black/white glitter polish.
I did three coats of this, here they are in order:
One coat of "Clearly Spotted" |
Two coats of "Clearly Spotted" |
Three coats of "Clearly Spotted" |
Findings
Holographic -- The holographic polishes are not truly holographic like the Layla, Julep and even the China Glaze I've tried. Melissa read somewhere that these were actually duochrome instead. I'd classify them more as a metallic polish with fine glitter. But as you can tell, they do require at least two coats of polishes. Most metallics I get are full coverage with one coat. However at $2.97 a bottle, they're pretty damn nice whatever you call them.Polka Dots -- The color I bought definitely requires a base coat. It's clear with black and white glitter of varied sizes. It seems the other colors cover better than this one--check out Melissa's post on the Jade color to see what I mean. And like most glitters, this is not fun to remove.
Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots - Drops of Jade
The Holographic section was sadly not holographic at all. They looked like duo chrome, so that is why I didn't bother buying it. I believe Anya picked up one or two of them though so I'm hoping they're awesome!
I bought Drops of Jade which is a sheer-ish green polish with mixed sized black and white "polka dots". I'm actually really pleased with the results and can't wait to see which ones Anya bought. The below picture has 2 coats of polish on each nail. I did notice that the polka dots go everywhere and I had to be careful so it wasn't 20 on top of each other.
Anya's June Ipsy Bag
Here's what came in my Ipsy bag this month:
- J. Cat Beauty - Eyelashes + Eyelash Glue "EL20"
- J. Cat Beauty - Sparkling Cream Palette "Volta"
- Nyx Blush PB21 "Copper"
- Starlooks Lip Pencil "Bare"
- Chella ivory lace highlighter pencil
I realized I hadn't ever posted this. I've actually not tried any of the products yet. I know, I'm seriously slacking this month. Feel free to smack me. I deserved it.
But you should check out Melissa's Ipsy post and see the mess the J.cats sparkling Cream made of her hand.
Spotted: Nail Striping Tape at Walmart (and much more)
I wandered past these at Walmart after I dropped off a prescription for my other half's Vicodin (he just had an organ removed). They had an entire endcap in the makeup aisle devoted to nail art (Fing'rs brand)!
WOW!
Check it out--nail striping tape on the cheap! The items in the embellishment section of the endcap were all $2.48 (including the striping tape). I had to wait four weeks for my tape to arrive from China so...this relatively cheap, instant gratification is awesome! (That said, I didn't buy any because I haven't made a dent in the twelve rolls I already have).
Further down the endcap are these sweet box sets include a stamping set and a striping set. These were $6.48 as you can see from the photo below.
So if you've ever wanted to try striping or stamping, now is your chance without having to order from Amazon.

The Bag:
It looks like the above possible spoiler picture was correct, we are getting that bag! :)
Mel's June Ipsy
Starlooks Lip Pencil (K337 Tipsy) - I honestly think this item is a tad bit odd since Starlooks is another make up subscription company. Not sure why you would want it in a competitors box. Product-wise, I don't use lip pencils, so this will be going to a friend.
Update: I take back what I said, I swatched it and it's super creamy, and really pigmented. Color me impressed.
NYX Blush: PB14 Spice - I've been dying to get a NYX blush for awhile now and this color is super pigmented. Can't wait to use this!
J.Cat Beauty Sparkling Cream Palette: Suzie - Not really my style, but I'll try it out.
Update: Tried it out and no. NO! My hand was invaded by glitter. Don't fall for its tricks.
Cailyn Cosmetics Line-Fix Gel Eyeliner with Brush Built-In: Purple - I received the color purple. I'm not actually going to use this since I have 3-4 other gel liners waiting on me.
J.Cat Beauty Eyelash + Eyelash Glue: UN13 - YAY I <3 lashes! Side note: They're 100% human hair. That kind of terrifies me.
I'll update this post with reviews or do a new post if I really like the item(s).
What items did you get in your Ipsy this month?
Sample Society - June
This month's Sample Society was all about facial cleansing and moisturizing. Here's what was in my box:
- hope in a jar moisturizer
- stila sheer tinted moisturizer in "fair"
- Murad Age Reform Exfoliating Cleanser
- Stila Lip Glaze "apricot"
- Illume "Desert Tulip" Candle
philosophy hope in a jar moisturizer
This was the first product I tried from the box. Though the moisturizer makes my skin nice and soft, it has a horrible medicinal scent that I just can't get past. And it lingers for a good twenty minutes. With the full size at a whopping $40, I'll stick with my cheaper scentless $12 pump stuff.
stila sheer tinted moisturizer in "fair"
I grabbed this while I was mowing the lawn because it has an SPF of 20. I'm not quite sure how this can be sheer, but somehow tinted and have a color to it (fair) at the same time. It does come out of the tube looking like fair BB cream but it goes on pretty sheer. For the few moments I paid attention it did seem to even out my skin tone. However I didn't feel particularly moisturized. I did feel like I was wearing makeup. Not a good thing for something I usually like to feel weightless. The full size on this is $34.
Murad Age Reform Exfoliating Cleanser
This isn't a bad cleanser. I'd class this as a very gentle exfoliator. It's not much to write home about. Especially not considering how much the full sized costs, $36.
Stila Lip Glaze "apricot"
I've yet to try this. I have so many lip products currently open that I can't bring myself to open another. And with a full size at $22, I don't want to fall in love.
Illume "Desert Tulip" Candle
I'll admit I was a little put off when I opened the tin and discovered a candle. In a beauty box? Okay. *shrug* But this cute mini candle smells fairly nice, claiming it fuses notes of red tulip, raspberry, and musk. I've yet to burn it. Not sure I will since I like opening the cover and sniffing it. The full size on this is also $22.
Not real thrilled with this month's Sample Society. And given I wasn't thrilled with last month's either, I'm not sure I'll buy July's.

Dr. Scholl's massaging gel insoles for Women
I got these free as part of being a BzzAgent. Friday I shoved these babies in my Skechers Oxfords because I knew I'd be hitting the shops after work. They lifted me about a 1/3 of an inch and rubbed the back of my heels against the shoes, but otherwise they weren't a problem.
I was able to comfortably walk for several hours. My feet did begin to ache after about 3 hours--which is fairly normal with or without inserts. I didn't really notice feeling particularly massaged. Given the cost of these ($10), I'd have expected a little more of a boost. Fortunately I got them free.
